Joseph Jacobs (1934 - 2015)

Beckett Gallery and Beckett Fine Art have featured exhibitions of Indigenous artist, Joseph Jacobs [Cayuga; Bear Clan] since 1980. We had the honour of watching the artist at work in his studio.

Jacobs creates his narrative traditions in stone: carved in steatite, soapstone, alabaster, limestone, clay and wood sculptures as well as bronze castings.  Polishing and re-etching techniques in stone allow collectors to discover the ancient knowledge of the Iroquois through Indigenous mediums.

Jacobs brought a strong voice to his Cayuga roots, Iroquois history. Jacobs shared, “I want to give permanence in stone to the legends of my people.”

In 1981, Jacobs was commissioned by the Canadian House of Commons to create a sculpture commemorating the Iroquois' Great Law of Peace. The limestone five-panel work took almost 5 years to create and is permanently installed in the House of Commons. He was awarded the Order of Canada in 1985 for his contributions to the Canadian Native Art Heritage.

Beckett Fine Art proudly and respectfully represents the art of Joseph Jacob.
