As a result of the Haudenosaunee's alliance with the British during the American War for Independence and the devastating loss of ancestral lands in the United States, the Haudensaunee were issued a tract of land six miles on either side of the Grand River. This treaty was meant to stand for eternity, however since that time less than 5% of original 950,000 acres remains in the care of the Six Nations of The Grand River. Due to this loss of the stewardship over the land, large portions of the Grand River have become irrevocably polluted by farm runoff and heavy metals like chromium and aluminum. These disturbingly high levels of pollution have a direct impact on the diversity of wildlife found in the Grand River, including some already endangered species of fish, birds and mammals.
